The only people who say that credit unions don’t need to evolve are credit union employees.
And maybe some members.
But open any credit union publication. Go to any credit union conference. Check out any statistics about mobile adoption, digital banking, and consumer preferences.
You’ll see that technology is the future, and most credit unions are struggling to stay relevant. Furthermore, credit unions rarely have the resources to develop competitive technology themselves. And you know what that means…
Understanding and working with fintechs. And while CU 2.0 explores financial technology, strategy, and fit, we, like every other publication out there, don’t cover fintech news for credit unions.
But Finopotamus does.
Introducing Finopotamus
It feels odd “introducing” a publication that has been around for a year now. They’ve already been introduced in several places. You may already be a subscriber. Maybe you follow them on LinkedIn. Or perhaps you saw some of their articles featured in our blog and newsletter (such as this one and this one).
But they deserve a formal introduction, too.
Finopotamus is a digital publication with the tagline, Fintech News for Hungry CUs. Finopotamus’s goal is to cover news and information that can be hard to find elsewhere. And it doesn’t lack for credentials. It was founded one year ago by three veteran tech reporters in the credit union industry, W.B. King, John San Filippo, and Roy Urrico. Together, they have the better half of a century’s worth of experience on the beat.
Of course, that’s in the interest of saving space. To read a bit more about each author, you can read their short bios here. They present quite a resumé.
The best part of Finopotamus isn’t that they’re well-qualified, though. The fact is, there’s a significant lack of reporting where credit unions and fintechs intersect.
Think: Spotlights on new providers and key players; Conference coverage; Breaking news; Market and trend data with in-depth analysis. The list goes on.
What’s Next for Finopotamus
Finopotamus doesn’t just provide credit union fintech news. This year, they partnered with Credit Union tech-talk to host the first annual Tekkie Awards. The 2021 honors will be awarded for outstanding achievement in credit union technology.
(Sorry, this year’s nomination period has passed. Stay tuned for the 2022 awards, fintechs!)
This year’s Tekkie Awards will go to providers in the following categories:
- Core Integration
- COVID-19 Response
- Data and Analytics
- Lending
- Self-Service
Winners will be announced in July, marking Finopotamus’s 1-year anniversary. CU 2.0 will make note of the winners and, where applicable, include them in our fintech rankings and guides.
The Finopotamus team also recently announced a new partnership with CUbroadcast. You’ll be seeing a lot more of them, we expect!
